Description:
Does the structure of your company and the size of your UX team affect your role and responsibilities? Absolutely! Solo practitioners face the challenge of wearing too many hats, and the fun of having the chance to try everything. Members of a large team sometimes feel they are forced to specialize, but have the fun of colleagues and peers to collaborate with. Find out how the roles of usability and UX practitioners vary in different organizations, and the pros and cons of different team structures, before you hunt for your next job. Our panelists will share stories and perspectives based on their diverse backgrounds:

Biography:
Steve Arrington has been the sole UX professional at a mid-sized technology solutions company for the past 3 years. In that time, the company has gone from using his position for creating screen assets and conducting occasional heuristic evaluations to adopting a standard user-centered design approach. Previously, he has worked as both solo practitioner and as part of a team of peers.

Laura Chessman currently works on a small team within a large organization where she specializes in information architecture. In her last job she was a solo practitioner trying to drive usability improvements in a small software company. And before that she was a member of a large team of generalists.

Cory Lebson has been involved in usability for the past 14 years. During that time, he has functioned as a junior and then senior usability consultant for both a smaller usability and then a larger IT consulting organization. He subsequently was a usability/market research director at a distance-learning company. For the past 10 months, Cory has been a solo practitioner doing user research projects for government, non-profit, and commercial organizations.
