Description:
How many times has a developer quipped to a usability designer, "We can’t make it look pretty because you made us make it accessible and usable?" Is there some unheard of guideline that means that something must be ugly for it to be usable and accessible? Many do not believe that users have advanced in the past 20 years of heavy computer use and therefore, everything must look the same for a user not to be confused. The purpose of this talk is to invigorate designers and encourage them to challenge the tried and true, while not forgetting the conventions built upon from the last 20 years of the personal computer.

Key points:

  • Be exposed to new ideas in User Interface design that break out from current conventions
  • Inspired to explore designs and solutions outside the tried and true

  • Understand the benefit of applying a holistic design process instead of merely adhering to common guidelines.

Biography:
Rob Ryne - Equal parts designer and developer, Mr. Rhyne has a perspective not commonly found in the technology field: he believes that technology should appear as beautiful to the user as it does to the developer. He is a veteran User Experience Designer that has participated in many large-scale design activities, including recent work for the Maryland Department of Health, the American Red Cross, a large defense organization, and the Environmental Protection Agency. He has been an advocate for user-centered design and knows how to sell it to large agencies not often concerned with the everyday user.

Due to his background in development, he seeks to apply the same type of pattern-based methodology to design. He is a strong believer that usable design comes in several different flavors.
