Description:
Today's internet users, especially those in their teens and 20s, turn to a diverse range of information sources online, many of which are created and maintained by their peers, not by credentialed experts. The future of health communication depends as much on the future of the participatory Web ("Health 2.0") as it does on traditional communication avenues.

I will trace the trend lines for blogs, social networking sites, online repositories for photos and videos, wikis and other online resources. I will also review the current internet population statistics, including the increasing importance of understanding home broadband penetration vs. dial-up access among various demographic groups.

Biography:
Susannah Fox is an Associate Director at the Pew Internet & American Life Project, a research organization funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts to examine the social impact of the internet. Prior to joining the Pew Internet Project in 2000, Fox was the editor of the website USNews.com, which she helped launch in 1996. She has also worked as a researcher for RealNetworks (1994) and for The Harwood Group (1992-93).

Fox graduated from Wesleyan University in 1992 with a degree in anthropology. Her current research interests include how people use internet health resources, how internet users deal with issues of privacy and security online, and how internet use varies among demographic groups (most recently: seniors, Latinos, people living with disability or chronic disease). She is also a contributor to a multi-author blog: e-patients.net.
