Discussion: Making Usability Part of the Development Process

Date and time:
December 13, 2005 (Tuesday)
7:00-8:30 p.m.

Location:
La Madeleine Restaurant
1915-C Chain Bridge Road, McLean 22102
Chain Bridge (Hwy. 123) & Tysons Corner Rd.
703-827-8833

Description:
So often, our contributions as usability professionals are unknown, unrecognized, or misunderstood. So often, job 1 is to explain what we do and persuade others that it's worth doing.

Why is is so difficult to integrate usability into the development process? Why is it so difficult to change an organization? Does hard data (such as ROI studies) help to make the case? Is anecdotal evidence (such as positive feedback from customers) more persuasive? Are there specific techniques, persuasive arguments, or "magic words"?

If you've experienced resistance – be it quiet non-cooperation or personal attacks -- bring your rants, raves, war stories, and success stories to an evening of informal discussion and idea sharing.

The discussion will include topics such as:

  • How do you tell people what you do, in 25 words or less?
  • How do you get others to recognize your skills and contributions?
  • When developers are used to "running the show" how do you make them recognize your expertise? How do you work cooperatively with them?
  • Why do organizations resist making usability analysis part of development?
  • Why do certain groups claim usability as "their job" even when they are not doing it?
  • How can you persuade an organization to integrate usability into the development process?
  • How do you persuade a director or vice-president to exercise leadership when that support is needed?
  • Is there "secret" development going on that you learn about informally? What is the correct response?
  • How do you remain optimistic and positive?
