    Full Description:

Every design project faces some tough situations. Design teams may not agree on a direction, making it difficult to execute on an aggressive plan. Clients may provide conflicting feedback, forcing designers spend as much time managing politics as doing design. Design decisions made in one meeting may be reversed in the next, delaying progress and depressing morale. These are but a few of the challenges that arise.

Designers are sometime ill-equipped to deal with complex situations. We focus on quality of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Our accomplishments are measured by the content of our portfolio, not the stories it took to get there.

Even the best planned projects hit a bump in the road, and designers on the path to leadership need to build a repertoire for anticipating, managing, and recovering from them. In this session, Dan Brown will offer a glimpse into the techniques he uses to deal with difficult situations.

    About the Speaker:

Dan BrownTogether with Nathan Curtis, Dan established user experience design firm EightShapes to fill a gap in the DC web design community. His portfolio includes work for NCR, Discovery Education, National Geographic, Cisco, and the US Department of Energy. As the company continues to grow, Dan increasingly balances his client work with internal education and his activity in the greater web design community.

Dan's passion for fostering design talent began when he became involved with the Washington, DC information architecture community. It has led to authoring Communicating Design, writing for design publications Boxes and Arrows and UX Matters, facilitating workshops for Nielsen Norman Group and School of Vision Arts, and leading seminars at the IA Summit and UX Lisbon. In 2006, his interest in culminated in co-founding EightShapes.

Dan began his career as a jack-of-all-trades web guy for a technical book publisher. After moving to Washington, DC in 1998, he focused on user experience design for major internet consulting firm US Web (later marchFIRST). He spent 2002-2006 in various government roles. In 2006, Dan published the first edition of Communicating Design. Revised in 2010, the book helps designers improve techniques for documenting and presenting their design concepts.
